Domesticated Animals, 2021 Five Years Gallery
Concept and production Emma Starkey
Collaborator Robin Woodward
This work was produced in response to the 2021 lockdown. Five Years Gallery, London, provided the support that enabled me to
create an innovative multiscreen live art installation that delved deep into the fragmented and relative nature of perception and perspective. By leveraging various devices and angles, I explored the intricacy between people and their screens, highlighting the negotiation of streaming locations and the ever-shifting viewpoints. This included collaboration from outside and blurred the distinctions between “outside” and “inside” spaces, an example of this was a man who logged in and proceeded to watch us while we watched him eating a giant wedding cake in the snow in Iceland.
This project went beyond mere technical exploration. It became a poignant narrative of two artists grappling with a deteriorating personal relationship, confined together in a shared space. Through this multi-lens, I examined the complexities of cohabitation, shared indifference, and the raw, unfiltered emotions that surface when lives are laid bare across multiple streaming platforms and angles. This work not only captured the essence of our digital age but also shared global loneliness.
